The community is invited to "A Day of Thanksgiving" service and dinner at the Long Beach Evangel Revival Community Church, cosponsored by the Vision of Hope Caregivers, Inc.
Those who may be spending the holiday alone are particularly welcome.
The service will begin at 11 a.m., and the dinner will begin at noon. Free clothing will also be available.
To contribute a gift of food or clothing, call 432-1527 or drop gifts off at the church, located at 569 National Blvd.
Chili cookoff at VFW
The Long Beach VFW will hold a chili cook-off Nov. 18 from 2 to 6 p.m. to benefit its Veterans' Relief Fund.
Do people tell you you make a great pot of chili? This is a chance to prove it, and to challenge last year's winner, Mike Meachow.
The cook-off will be held at the Long Beach VFW, Post 1384, located at 675 W. Park Ave. in Long Beach. To enter, register at the post before Sunday. A $5 entry fee is requested. To become a judge, show up at the Post Nov. 18 with a $15 donation and an appetite. Judges will get a scorecard, one drink and all the chili they can eat.

Long Beach Ice Arena announces schedule
The Arena at Long Beach has announced its fall schedule.
The public schedule is Monday through Friday, 9 to 10:45 a.m., plus Mondays from 3:45 to 5:45 p.m. and Fridays from 1 to 2:45 p.m.; 3 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays the rink is open from 1:45 to 4 p.m.
In addition, the arena offers Sticks 'n' Pucks for all ages, open hockey for players older than 15 and freestyle skating. General admission is $7 for adults, $5 for children under 12 and seniors. Skate rentals are $3.
The arena will be closed Thanksgiving Day. For more information, call 431-6500.
Islanders salute women's sports
The New York Islanders are offering a great night of exciting NHL hockey action at great savings for everyone who supports the Women's Sports Foundation.
The Islanders organization is offering $55 end mezzanine tickets at a price of $35 for the team's upcoming match-up against the Philadelphia Flyers taking place on Thursday Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Nassau Veteran's Memorial Coliseum.
There will be a special pre-game 'meet and greet' at the coliseum with Team USA hockey player Angela Ruggiero.
A portion of the evening's ticket sales will go directly to the Women's Sports Foundation. The foundation was founded in 1974 by Billie Jean King, and is dedicated to advancing the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity.
