Rockville Centre Historical Society

The Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre invites one and all to visit and enjoy the historic restoration at 28 Hempstead Ave. Summer hours are Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and also by appointment for groups. On display are kitchen tools, carpentry tools, period furniture, pharmaceutical collectibles and much more. The Victorian Garden is in full bloom for all to enjoy. There is no fee. Stop World Hunger Tennis Tournament

Register for the 30th

annual Stop World Hunger Tennis

Tournament, honored as the 2010 “Innovative Tennis Program of the Year” will involve recreational tennis players from more than 50 communities across Long Island. It started on Aug. 28 and will run through Nov. 14. Divisions are set up according to ability levels and location. Players schedule their own matches at mutually convenient times and sites. The cost for the tournament is $6 for singles and $10 for doubles. The tournament format consists of no elimination, round-robin play. Awards are presented to winners in each division. Molloy Institute for Lifelong Learning

At 2 p.m. on Sept. 1, Molloy College will host an open house to introduce the community to its Institute for Lifelong Learning. Have fun in retirement. Enhance your health and stay young. Invigorate social contacts and support systems. Attend frequent symposia, seminars, concerts, and plays. Membership card receives some discounts in surrounding community. RVC Choral Society

The Rockville Centre Choral Society, our local community choir, is beginning its fall season with rehearsals every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. beginning on Sept. 1. They are looking for talented basses and tenors but always welcome new sopranos and altos. The group meets in the music room of St. Mark's United Methodist Church. Concerts will be in December. Casting call

The Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts will hold auditions for "13" a new musical on Sept 7 from 6-10 p.m. at South Side Middle School, 67 Hillside Ave. They are looking for actors between the ages of 12-18. Homemakers meeting

The Rockville Centre Chapter of Homemakers invites the public to its meeting on Sept. 7 at the John A.Anderson Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Rd. The group encourages community service and teaches many crafts including beading, sewing, knitting and cooking. It will meet every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the remainder of the year. Defensive Driving Course

A Defensive Driving Course for insurance and point reduction will be given at the Church of the Ascension of Rockville Centre on Sept. 11 from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. For information and registration, call (631) 360-9720. The cost is $45.

Twilight Dinner

The Bernard Klein Charity Fund Twilight Dinner and Chinese Auction will be held on Sept. 12, from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Mill River Manor Best Western, 173 Sunrise Highway. Proceeds will go to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the American Lung Association and the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The $45 per person cost includes a sit-down, five-course dinner (kosher meals available on request at the time of reservation), music, free favors and door prizes, followed by a Chinese auction. Open house at Maple Pointe

In honor or Assisted Living Week, Maple Pointe, 260 Maple Ave. will host an open house on Sept. 14 from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.. Entertainment and refreshments will be served.

Tree of Life Yoga

Central Synagogue of Nassau County, 430 DeMott Ave., is sponsoring a fall session of evening yoga classes. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels. The Tree of Life Yoga will be offering a series of 12 classes each, beginning on Sept. 14, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. The series of classes is available for $150 or you may pay as you go for $15 a class.All members of the community are invited to participate. Irish language classes at Molloy

Homework Helpers, a partnership program between the Sandel Senior Center Service Corps and the Rockville Centre Public Library will offer help with homework to students in grades 1-6 every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 20 in the Children’s Room of the Library. Be on the lookout for further details or contact the Children’s Room for additional information.

Kids’ Fest

The annual Kids’ Fest open house celebration at the Rec Center is scheduled for Sept. 11 from noon to 4 p.m. Representatives from all the village’s sports organizations will attend, as well as from the police and fire departments, the post office, the library, Guild for the Arts, the Lions Club and many more.

Bicycle Safety Week

The Rockville Centre Parks and Recreation Department, with the RVC Police Department and the RVC PTA, will again offer the Cycle With Care program at the five elementary schools in the district during the week of Sept. 12. Anyone wishing to register a bicycle must see that it is equipped with strong brakes, a warning device (bell, horn or whistle), front and rear reflectors at least 3-inches square, reflector pedals, reflective tires or wheels with reflectors on the spokes. The inspections will take place at Hewitt Elementary School on Sept. 16, at Wilson and Riverside schools on Sept. 14 and at Covert and Watson on Sept. 15.

Fall Program Registration

Registration is now being accepted for the Fall programs that begin the week of Sept. 19. All registrations are first-come, first-served and all participants must have valid 2010-11 recreation membership cards. Detailed flyers are available at the Rec Center or by calling (516) 678-9338 or 9339. New programs offered this year include: Kinder-crafts, Happy Piano Jamboree, Mad Science, Brush Strokes, Fencing, All-Star Sports, RVC Rec Center Gymnastic Competition Team and Dodgeball for Kids.

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips and programs are scheduled. Check with the center for a schedule.
