Neighborhood Watch Meeting

The Rockville Centre Police Department will hold an informational meeting at Village Hall on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. to explain its Neighborhood Watch program to interested residents. The program organizes neighbors to be extra eyes and ears for the police to help prevent and reduce crime. The meeting will explain the philosophy and operation of the program and will see to identify residents willing to become Block Captains in the program, which does not include patrolling.

Used cleat collection

Members of the 8th grade South Side Middle School soccer team will be on hand at the Boys/Girls Soccer Kick-off Classic at Seklos Sports Complex on Sept. 7 starting at 6 p.m. to collect used soccer cleats in good condition. Donations will help ensure that children around the world have the equipment they need to play soccer. The collection will continue in the SSMS cafeteria and Soccer Station through the fall.

Defensive Driving Class at

the Church of the Ascension

Casting call: Open audition

for classically-trained dancers

and singers

On Sept. 8 and 9 at 10 a.m. for dancers and 12 p.m. for singers, the Madison Theatre at Molloy College, 1000 Hempstead Ave. will hold a audition for its Family Concert Series Presents … ”An Afternoon of Pas De Deux” with the Children’s Orchestra Society (COS) Orchestra. The performance date is Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. The audition is open to classically trained ballet, pointe and jazz dancers ages 15-to-24, both male and female. RVC Homemakers Club

Fall is almost here and members of the Rockville Centre Homemakers will hold their first meeting after the summer recess on Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. in the RVC Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Road. The Homemakers is a non-profit organization that goes above and beyond to help local groups, like food pantries, abused women and veterans' families. They give crocheted hats for premies to local hospitals, shawls and lap robes to cancer patients and manufacturers coupons to veterans families, collecting $75,000 of those last year. The Homemakers are a group of talented women who meet each Tuesday to share their knowledge of cooking, sewing, knitting and various crafts with other members. September concert and World Trade Center steel dedication

On Sept. 11 at 12:30 p.m. Molloy College will hold a Mass in its Sacred Heart Chaple followed at 3:15 by a dedication of World Trade Center steel and a 3:30 concert in its Public Square. The September Concert Foundation was created for the sole purpose of organizing an annual music festival in New York in remembrance of the events of Sept. 11, 2001 and a celebration of our universal humanity. This year, Molloy College has been the recipient of a piece of the Steel from the World Trade Center (WTC.) A sculpture has been created using the steel and it will be displayed on the Molloy College campus. The community is invited join in the dedication of the WTC sculpture and for the annual September Concert highlighting songs and music performed by Molloy students and community members. Tree of Life Yoga

Central Synagogue of Nassau County, 430 DeMott Ave., is again sponsoring a Fall session, with evening classes of yoga. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels. The Tree of Life Yoga will be offering a series of 12 classes, beginning on Sept. 13, at 6:30 p.m. — a new day and time. You may pay as you go for $15 a class. Rockville Centre Newcomers Club

Members of the community are invited to the RVC Newcomers Club annual board meeting on Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. at 122 Hempstead Ave.

Nominations for new board members will be accepted and elections will be held. The Newcomers Club is a community-based organization that sponsors social events throughout the year to help residents, old and new, get the most out of living in our village. The Newcomers Club organizes a wide variety of events for ladies, couples and the whole family, designed to appeal to all interests, promote community businesses and support local charities.

Starts Sept. 15. Event consists of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. Registration fee is $6 for singles and $10 for doubles. Divisions are created according to ability level and location. Players schedule their own matches at mutually convenient times and sites. Registration deadline is Sept. 7. Village Art Club

Indie Singer-Songwriter Kevin Devine at Molloy College

On Sept 26 at 8 p.m. Kevin Devine, an American songwriter and musician from New York will perform at the school's Madison Theatre. Devine, who is known for alternately introspective and political lyric and melodic acoustic guitar tunes. He cites his influences as Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith, Guns N’Roses, Brother Paramo and Nirvana, among others. Long Island Singer Rich Albergo to open for Devine. Orchestra/Mezzanine seats are $20. Nassau Veterans Resource Center

Help for veterans and returning servicemen and women in filing claims, getting whatever federal, state and local benefits are due them, finding jobs. Also collecting all forms of clothing and toiletries for homeless veterans and the men and women still serving overseas. Watercolors by Pat Hoshino

Pat Hoshino is a Long Island artist who began working in watercolors and instantly fell in love with the medium. Her affinity for the medium is clearly evident in her work. A representational painter, her subjects are most often flowers, landscapes, and interesting people. The majority of her landscapes are of New England, especially Maine, and of Long Island. Pat is well known for her paintings of the chessmen in Washington Square Park, as well as, her personal favorite, Golden Girls, of three women sitting on a park bench in San Francisco. Hoshino has been an artist member of the National Art League for more than 20 years having studied with a number of nationally acclaimed teachers. Her work has been widely exhibited at both local and national shows, and has received numerous accolades.

EASEL Annual Show

The lower level galleries will feature the artistic efforts of members of Town of Hempstead’s Experienced Art Students Enrichment League or EASEL in September. Many members of this creative and spirited group have won awards and exhibited across the region. EASEL holds meetings every Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Oceanside Senior Center, 2900 Rockaway Ave. Programs include art demonstrations, field trips, workshops, discussions and, most importantly, the opportunity for members to meet and collaborate with fellow artists. Kids Fest

The annual Kids Fest free open house celebration at the Rec Center is scheduled for Sept. 15 from noon to 4 p.m. As always, there will be refreshments, give-aways, pony rides and other attractions for Rockville Centre families to enjoy. Representatives from all the village's sports organizations will attend, as well as the Rockville Centre Police and Fire departments, the Post Office, the Library, the Guild for the Arts, the Lions Club and many others.

Fall Nursery School

There are a limited number of openings in the Fall 2012 nursery school classes at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center, 111 North Oceanside Road for children entering kindergarten in September 2013 or 2014. Classes follow the Rockville Centre public school holiday schedule. Openings are in the morning and afternoon classes. There are also opportunities for extended day programs.

Fall program registration

Registration is now being accepted for the Fall programs that begin the week of Sept. 17. All registrations are first-come, first-served and all participants must have valid 2012-2013 Recreation Center membership card. New programs offered this year include: Happy Piano, Baby Bounce & Jamboree, Roll Around Fun Card, Bricks for Kids, Jr. Gourmet Cooking, Artful Adventures, Fencing, Schoolhouse Chess, All 4 One Yoga, as well as the Rec. Gymnastics tryouts

Tryouts for the Rec Center gymnastics teams will be held the week of Sept. 10. Candidates must pre-register. A parents meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. Call Ginger at (516) 678-9238 for information.

Bicycle Safety Week

The RVC Parks and Recreation Department and the Police Department, in cooperation with the RVC P.T.A., will again offer the Cycle With Care program at the five elementary schools during September.

Anyone wishing to register a bicycle must see that it is equipped with strong brakes, a warning device (bell, horn or whistle), front and rear reflectors at least 3-inches square, reflectors on pedals, and reflective tires or wheels with reflectors on the spokes. The inspections will take place at Wilson and Riverside schools on Sept. 11; at Covert and Watson schools on Sept. 12; and at Hewitt School on Sept. 13.

Part-time jobs available

Residents who are at least 16 years old may apply to work part-time on weekday and weekend programs, parties and special events. Applications are available at the Rec. Center's office.
