Lijoi, 77, served as a Navy storekeeper during World War II aboard the LST (Landing Ship Tank) 510, with a 160-member crew, providing food and supplies to his comrades. He recently attended a reunion of the ship's crew in Charleston, S.C., where he reminisced with 13 sailors who were involved in the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944.

Lijoi said he doesn't favor a war with Iraq unless combat is absolutely necessary to ensure the safety of the U.S. and the world. I think we should wait until the last possible minute
