Carter, who played for the New York Giants for two years and for the New York Jets for another two through August 2005, allegedly attempted to strangle a former girlfriend while at a Center Street home at around 11 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, according to authorities.
The 26-year-old woman was also dragged by her hair 100 feet across a driveway and then down a flight of stairs, Nassau County Police detectives said. Carter fled the scene when the woman's cell phone began ringing, but surrendered himself at the 1st Precinct in Baldwin the following night. She was taken by ambulance to Nassau University Medical Center and treated for cuts and bruises to her arms, feet, lower back and left thigh, police said.
Carter, who lives in Lineville, Ala., was a fifth-round draft pick of the Giants out of that state's Troy University in 2001. More recently, he played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006.
The formal misdemeanor charges against Carter are fourth-degree stalking, third-degree attempted assault with intention to cause physical harm, and third-degree menacing. Each carries a sentence of up to one year in prison, according to Eric Phillips, a spokesman for the District Attorney's Office. During the arraignment in 1st District Court, Judge Edmund Dane also ordered Carter to anger management counseling and granted the alleged victim an order of protection.
Special Victims Bureau prosecuting attorney Christine Geier was assigned to the case when Carter returned to court before Judge Valerie Bullard on Friday, July 6. He is due back in court on Aug. 3.
