Facing Destiny: Children in European Portraiture
Court painters traditionally portrayed the privileged world of royalty through their costume, jewelry and emblems of office. This NCMA exhibition glimpses personalities such as Maria Theresa of Austria or Louis XIV of France when they were shown as miniature adults, in a time before childhood was seen as a phase in and of itself. The exhibiti surveys the conception of royalty and aristocracy in art and offers a look at people who later became important historic personages. Through May 25. Nassau County Museum of Art, Main Galleries, 1 Museum Dr., Roslyn Harbor. 484-9337.

Ruminations
John Anderson's abstract paintings are on display in this showcase of his works. The self-taught painter's experimentation with color, shape and interval have led him to produce a large and serious corpus of abstract images over the course of three decades. Anderson is preoccupied with color relationships and, in particular, how the material condition of paint (which he makes himself from egg, pigment, and oil) affects the character of those relationships. Through Apr. 22. Meet the artist at a reception, Tuesday, Apr. 7, 6 p.m. Adelphi University's Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Arts, 1 South Ave., Garden City, 877-4462 or galleryexhibitions@adelphi.edu.
