Expanding library seems only way to go

The Merrick Library Board's recent attempts to find a larger site for the library elsewhere in the area have been exhausted, officials say. Thus, the board is meeting with architects and planners to figure out a way to expand the library at its current location on Merrick Avenue, just south of the Sunrise Highway.
      That's no easy proposition, however, considering how little room they have to work with where the library now stands, officials said. At an October 11 community meeting at the Merrick Library, representatives from Hardy, Holzman, Pfeiffer Associates, a Manhattan-based architectural firm, presented two possibilities for enlarging the library: one, construct a new library across Narwood Avenue, closing the street off to through-traffic; or two, demolish the existing building and construct a new library in its place.
      More than 40 residents of the area surrounding the library, including many living south of Sunrise Highway on Narwood Court, Narwood Avenue, Kirkwood Avenue and Hewlett Avenue, attended the meeting.
