Fast start for Lady Spartans

Posted
After a tough inaugural season, the Lady Spartans' soccer team is off to a 3-1 start in just its second year as a varsity program. Wins over Freeport, Great Neck South and Long Beach have first-year coach Dayna Contento very optimistic.
"The girls are playing terrific soccer," Contento said. "They practice hard, work as a team, and are very determined to succeed on the field."
One of the keys to Elmont's early season success has been its ability to jell. With most of the same players returning from last season, Contento knew she had talent, but it was raw and undisciplined. "The girls had to learn that you can have a team of good soccer players, but not necessarily be a strong team," she said. "This year, they're more cohesive and dedicated to working together as a unit."
Senior left wing Laura Rivera, one of five captains, had five goals through Elmont's first four games. The fast, hard-working Rivera is great leader on the field who has a knack for hitting the back of the net. A great complement to Rivera is Debra Okeke, a junior left halfback. Okeke plays an aggressive brand of soccer, and has tremendous chemistry with Rivera. "Debra is very focused and determined to do whatever it takes to get the job done," Contento said. "She's a real spark for us."
At midfield, junior captain Maya Dennis is a dominating force. Dennis, who has scored five goals, including the sole tally in Elmont's only loss, a 2-1 decision to undefeated Kennedy, leads with speed, strength and determination. Junior sweeper Diana Allen, another of Elmont's captains, leads a strong defensive unit. She is joined on defense by fellow captains, senior Leslie Anselme and junior Jessica Diaz. Sophomore right wing Ayana Duncanson has four goals on the season, including a hat trick against Freeport in the season opener.
Contento is quick to point out that support from Pete Gaffney, the school's athletic director, and Principal John Capozzi plays a huge part in the team's success. "I'm so grateful to have the administration behind the program, coming to the games to cheer the girls on," Contento said. "The girls are accomplishing some great things on the field, and it makes it even more special when they know that people are interested."
The Spartans play seven games this month, including a rematch with Kennedy, at home, on Oct. 17 at 4:30 p.m. While Contento knows the girls have several key contests prior to the Kennedy game, she's excited about the rematch. "I felt it was a game we should have been able to win," Contento said. "We have a lot of tough games, but that's really one we're looking forward to."
