There was
one in Southampton that some people made a fuss about, but the real action
on the links took place on June 15, at the Third Annual Father Lawrence Penzes
Memorial Golf Outing, sponsored by Lynbrook's Our Lady of Peace Parish. Sure the OLP event didn't have television coverage or thousands of spectators, but who wants a big crowd when you're playing golf anyway?
What the OLP outing had, that the PGA event did not, was an enthusiastic group of 106 gung-ho golfers who enjoyed a sunny day on the Lido Golf Course and played
a round in Father Larry's memory. And the OLP outing had celebrities of its
own. Many Lynbrook business people took part in the event, and among the
golfing "faithful" was OLP's own pastor Father Bill Breslawski and visiting
priest Father Charlie Keeney, who teed off with the rest of the group at 7
a.m.
What a sparkling day it was! The golf course was in great
condition, so the duffers couldn't use the course conditions as a handy
excuse for their (ahem!) inflated scores. Two players who thought the
conditions were just right were local businessman George Montine (Doar
Communications) and parishioner Bob Vassallo, who garnered prizes for
"longest drive" and "closest to the pin," respectively.
The real winner, though, was OLP Church -- more than $10,000
was raised for the parish, which is the largest total in the five years the outing
has been held!
When play was finished, Breslawski addressed the players during lunch
at the clubhouse. He remembered Father Larry's competitiveness, and his
love of sports and the people of Our Lady of Peace.
The outing has quickly become one of the most successful events at Our
Lady of Peace. Affectionately nicknamed "The Father Larry Open," the event
also had the support of the following local individuals and businesses as
"hole sponsors."
