Heat wave hits the beach; temps near 100

The dog days of August took a swipe at residents this week as temperatures chased the century mark in Long Beach.
Hot-weather advisories were issued throughout the New York area as officials urged people to stay indoors, out of the blistering, hot sun.
So naturally, many Long Islanders headed for the beach.
"I come out here for the waves," said Mike "G" of Oyster Bay, who for two summers has visited the beach almost every day when not working. "Even when it's real hot, I wouldn't miss coming down here."
The Oyster Bay man was among the many thousands of Long Islanders who fled to the shores Tuesday in hopes that an ocean breeze might be able to cool off their day.
Matt Kaye, a former West Hempstead resident now living on the North Shore, has been visiting the Long Beach coastline almost daily for 19 summers. When he's not spending the dog days of summer on the South Shore, he's keeping cool in his air-conditioned apartment.
"In heat like this, I stay in the AC and try to drink as much water as possible," Kaye said.
The ocean water seems to be the medicine many people use to beat the heat. Rob DePhillips of Oceanside has frequented Long Beach for 26 years, and there's nothing better than an ocean swim during a heat wave, he said.
"When I can't get here, I'm at my friend's house, where he keeps the AC at 60 degrees
