The installation of the solar panels was made possible, in part, by a rebate of $93,000 from the Long Island Power Authority through its Solar PV Rebate Program. "The balance of funding for the project was provided through the generosity of a HERJC member," said Rabbi Andrew Warmflash.
The solar array, to be installed by EmPower, consists of 120 solar panels. They will generate approximately 24,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, or about 5 percent of the synagogue's current electricity requirements. EmPower is a company which designs and installs solar energy systems for homeowners, businesses and institutions. They also can act as consultants for small to large scale renewable energy, energy efficiency and green building projects.,
This is just the beginning of a multiyear solar project, according to Warmflash. "The congregation recently adopted an environmental policy that recognizes the contemporary understanding of Jewish values Tikkun Olam - repairing the world - and Tzedek, which is justice," he said.
The Hewlett/East Rockaway Jewish Centre, he said, is striving to educate all of its congregants in environmental matters, so they can improve conservation in their homes and lives. He drew similarities between the celebration of Hanukkah and the installation of the solar panels.
"We want to continue the battle of the Macabees. We want to use less and less oil, and make it last longer," Warmflash said, comparing the effort to a miracle that occurred in Jerusalem in 165 B.C. That year, a small group of Jews, known as the Macabees, fought for and successfully won religious freedom from the oppressive Syrians. During the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple, there was only enough oil to light the N'er Tamid, or eternal light, for one night, but, by some miracle, the sacred lamp burned for eight days.
"We want to reduce our reliance on foreign oil," said the synagogue's president, Liz Kislik. "And we urge our congregants to conserve energy."
The dedication ceremony was followed by music from the chorus, a welcome to new members, and the traditional Hanukkah party.
