Finding true New England charm in Cape Cod's Falmouth
Posted
flying time from LaGuardia Airport, I was in Hyannis, Massachusetts, enroute to Falmouth, Cape Cod. I barely had time to finish my drink and snack provided gratis by U.S. Airways Express (operated by Colgan Air), before the plane landed and I was on my way to the Inn at West Falmouth. The Inn lived up to its billing as being a quiet and romantic charming get away place overlooking Buzzard's Bay with stunning sunset ocean views. As a matter of fact, if you don't own a family compound, like President John F. Kennedy staying at a Cape Cod Inn or Bed & Breakfast seems to be the way to go. On this visit to the Falmouth, I sampled the food and met with the friendly innkeepers. At the Inn at West Falmouth, the innkeeper, Su Moran is a former lawyer from San Francisco who chose to move to the East Coast with her spouse and family of four children. My room had a fireplace, a marble whirlpool bath, a king bed, HBO and stunning sunset ocean views. Also available to guests was billiards, a well kept tennis court, a heated swimming pool, afternoon snacks, a complimentary evening bar and a hearty New England breakfast with New York bagels.. Breakfast at the Chapoquoit Inn Bed & Breakfast was outstanding and featured yummy lemon pancakes made from Innkeeper Kim McIntyre's unique family recipe. These Bisquick pancakes are rolled like a sausage with a cream cheese center and a lemon sauce. (Recipe will be available in a future column). This charming Inn Bed & Breakfast is located on three beautifully landscaped acres with gazebo (designed and created by Innkeeper Tim McIntyre, a professional landscaper) in the heart of Falmouth's Historic District. It was originally built in 1739 on land purchased from the indigenous Native Americans. Kim and Tim McIntyre are enthusiastic young innkeepers deeply involved in preserving the historic Falmouth heritage and environment. The imagination and creative ability of Innkeeper Chris Wilson turned a Roman Catholic Church into the magnificent Belfry Inn in nearby Sandwich, Cape Cod. The grandeur of the stained glass windows, the elegantly carved mahogany confessionals, the regal royal blue and gold decorations just add to the majesty of the Belfry Inn's three buildings which include The Painted Lady, The Abbey and Bistro and The Village House. The Painted Lady has eleven fabulous guest rooms and exemplifies an era renowned for gentility (circa 1879) heralding the Victorian Age. It served as the Rectory, but now is an authentic "Painted Lady" with appropriate original multicolored drawings that proclaim the 19th century stylistic proclivities according to Innkeeper Wilson. The original ambiance of a Victorian manor house was maintained with the restoration of the original Eastlake newel stair post and Sandwich-glassed architectural nuances. The Painted Lady also has a great restaurant with a delectable luncheon menu. Sample recipes will be available in a future column of Dried Cranberry, Pecan, and Brie Spring Roll with St. Andre Dipping Sauce, Double Chocolate Brandy Cherry Mouse and Chicken Breast Stuffed with Brie, fire Roasted Peppers and Spinach wrapped in Proscuitto, with Red Pepper Emulsion. The Abbey has six guestrooms named appropriately Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday for God's creation. The décor includes vaulted ceilings with sky-lights, balconies and ultra massage whirlpool bathtubs with 24 jets. Lastly, the Village House has six additional themed bedrooms named the Pope Room, the Nye Room, the Swift Room, the Jarves Room and two Wing Tupper Rooms. All handsomely decorated with period wallpaper, lace window treatments, armoires and some with fireplaces. My visit to Cape Cod would not be complete without a spa treatment. I found the marvelous Bellezza Day Spa on Main Street in the town of Falmouth and received the ultimate facial massage that took years off my face and prepared me for some shopping, serious dining and sightseeing in Falmouth.Consult your travel professional or call the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce at 1-888 33 Cape Cod for travel and lodging information.Copyright by Marcia AbramsonE-mail: mascribe@aol.com
