A small house fire caused minor damage to a home on Remsen Avenue in Valley Stream Sunday everning.
Valley Stream firefighters were called to 15 Remsen Ave. shortly before 8 p.m. and had the fire out in less than 20 minutes. Fire Chief Joseph Fernandez said there was fire, smoke and water damage to the second floor and attic.
According to Fernandez, the homeowner was soddering pipes in the second floor bathroom. Some beams caught on fire and flames spread into the attic, he said. Fernandez estimated damage at about $5,000 and said the home is still livable.
About 60 firefighters responded to the scene. He said the response was quick because many firefighters were already at the firehouse.
All occupants made it safely out of the house and no other injuries were reported.
