The Island Park fire department responded to a LIRR substation at 112 Austin Blvd on Sat. Sept. 21 for smoke coming from the building.
The sub station supplies high voltage to the third rail on the Long Beach Branch of the railroad.
After hours of trying to get this fire out, heavy damage was caused to the substation impacting the line’s service.
Firefighters from Island Park, Point Lookout-Lido, Long Beach, Oceanside and Baldwin worked for hours to get the fire under control.
