On Aug. 16, a fire apparently started in the kitchen of a third floor apartment at 400 North Corona Avenue. The fire, reported to firefighters at 7:11 p.m., was spotted by residents as flames were seen coming from the kitchen window.
Valley Stream firefighters, making an aggressive interior attack, knocked the fire down in minutes, according to Walter Weltner, a fire department spokesman. Damage to the apartment was reportedly considerable and the apartments directly below the fire floor suffered water damage. No injuries were reported.
First Assistant Chief Joseph Garofalo was the incident commander until the arrival of Chief of Department Robert Petry.
