Welt, who has sat on the East Meadow Board of Fire Commissioners for the past 20 years, was elected to his fifth term. He scored a decisive victory over Charles Bullard, garnering 711 votes to Bullard's 190, a 78-to-22 percent victory margin.
The board's main function is to spend the tax dollars that fund the fire department, which operates under a roughly $3.8 million yearly budget.
Welt currently works as a division supervisor for the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office. He's also been an instructor for the Nassau County Fire Service Academy for the past 25 years.
In a much closer race, Raymond L'Hommedieu defeated friend Gus Pappas for East Meadow Fire Department treasurer.
L'Hommedieu received 508 votes to Pappas' 373, a 58-to-42 percent margin. After retiring from his job with the telephone company, L'Hommedieu started up his own communications business in 1990.
With more than 250 volunteers, the East Meadow Fire Department responds to more than 2,000 emergency calls a year.
