Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) has approved an economic development plan that will assist the owners of an internationally recognized crane and derrick engineering firm to upgrade their Lynbrook office building, allowing the company to remain and grow in Nassau County.
Howard I Shapiro & Associates, a 4th generation, family owned engineering company, has roots in Brooklyn going back to the 1940’s. “We have been in Lynbrook for about a dozen years,” said co-owner Jay Shapiro. “As a growing firm, we needed substantial expansion space. We were very fortunate to find what we were looking for right here in Lynbrook. With the assistance of The Nassau County IDA, we were able to satisfy our growth needs with viable costs, allowing us to stay in the community we love.
“Though, we may be hidden away in a nondescript office building, we are happy to be an anchor for the community, contributing every day to its well being,” said Shapiro. “Many of our employees have purchased homes in the area and all of us patronize the local stores and restaurants. In spite of its small town feel, Lynbrook has easy access to NYC and JFK Airport make it a great location for our firm. We hope that Howard I Shapiro & Associates remains a pillar of this great community for many years to come.
The company, which considered moving out of Nassau County, will spend more than $1.2 million on the renovations, intends to retain 47 jobs in Lynbrook and create another five jobs, according to Mangano’s office.
“My economic development team is working tirelessly to help local companies succeed and grow their operations in Nassau County,” said Mangano. “Retaining this Lynbrook employer is good news for the local economy and our residents.
The IDA approved an economic development with CMS Real Estate Holdings, LLC that will assist it in the renovation of 266 Merrick Road in Lynbrook. The 39,000-square-foot multi-tenant office building is primarily occupied by Howard I. Shapiro & Associates Consulting Engineers, P.C., a third-generation family business founded in 1946. Jay and Lawrence Shapiro, who own the engineering firm, also own CMS.
