Attendees at the free event were treated to a showing of Adam Sandler's 1995 comedy "Billy Madison" (rated PG-13). Students also received Italian ices and other goodies. Realitycheckny.com was on hand to sign kids up for its anti-smoking campaign. WBAB provided the music. And Nassau County police and the Merrick volunteer firefighters were on hand to make sure no one got hurt.
Gail Volk, the Wellness Council's outgoing executive director, said of the evening, "It was a great mix of kids, and that was really what I was hoping for."
Volk also noted that North Bellmore parent Stacy Spiegel was instrumental in making the movie night work. "She provided the vision and leadership on this as a community volunteer," said Volk, who is leaving the Wellness Council for the Western Suffolk Board of Cooperative Educational Services, where she will help school districts set up anti-smoking programs.
A number of members of the Wellness Council's Post-Prom Committee served as volunteer chaperones for the movie night.
