Flooded in a flash

According to James Callahan, Nassau County commissioner of emergency management and Malverne¹s deputy mayor, five to six inches of rain fell in a two-hour period on July 19.
A home in Elmont partially collapsed, Callahan reported. Police received 1,803 calls to 911 during the storm. On average, 911 receives about 250 calls during the same time period.
Nassau University Medical Center had to shut down its trauma unit for a brief period, and the Sun Harbor Nursing Home in Roslyn had to resort to backup power for a while.
³We knew we were gonna get some thunderstorms,² Callahan said. ³But we didn¹t know it was gonna be five inches in a two-hour period.²
Most of the emergency calls were from stranded motorists who drove through large puddles like the one on the right and flooded their engines.
