Fly with the Owls - and a tribute

Posted
To celebrate Pearl Harbor Day, Fly With The Owls began with a brief commemorative ceremony, honoring local veterans from several wars. Dom Longobardi, Kempton Hicks, Robert Slattery and Sal Spinicchia from the VFW Marine Corp League Lynbrook formed the Color Guard. Among the other local veterans attending the ceremony were: Patrick Cardone, VFW Commander Lynbrook; Patrick Iuliucci, Nassau County Council VFW Commander; Michael Popple, VFW Past Post Commander Lynbrook; Jack Barlow Adjutant, American Legion Post 335; Henry Speicher, American Legion Commander; John Zachmann, American Legion; and Jim Dillon, American Legion Marine Corps League. Among the other guests were Village Trustees Alan Beach and David Penso and State Assemblyman Bob Barra.
Bill Benson, a 90-year-old WWII veteran who was stationed on Governor's Island during the Pearl Harbor Attack, ran and finished the race at a respectable time of 58:10.
A portion of the proceeds from this benefit race will be donated to the Building Homes for Heroes Fund. The rest of the proceeds will benefit the Lynbrook Community Coalition, which funds activities to keep local teens safe and connected to their communities. The Lynbrook Public School District, Lynbrook Community Coalition and Village of Lynbrook sponsored this benefit run.
