Six hundred twenty-two participants streamed into Lynbrook from all over the metropolitan area for the 9th Annual Fly with the Owls 4-Mile Run/Walk last Saturday. The event attracted competitive runners and walkers, as well as many who were content to share in the feeling of community and help raise money for youth programs in Lynbrook. There was also a half-mile Fun Run for the youngest competitors.

Chris Mammone, of Massapequa, was the overall winner, finishing in 20 minutes, 28 seconds. Elodie Pinot, of Brooklyn, was the fastest woman, with a time of 25:38. Wheelchair racer Peter Hawkins, of Malverne, an annual participant in the race, finished first in the physically challenged category, with a time of 19:47. The oldest competitor was 94-year-old Bill Benson, of Valley Stream, who came across the finish line in at 1:20:07.

A crowd of volunteers, including dozens of Lynbrook School District staff members, helped race organizer Cathy Papandrew orchestrate a flawless event. The platinum and gold sponsors included Astoria Federal Savings, Almar Plumbing and Heating, Frazer & Feldman LLP, R.A. Krendel Contracting, Lynbrook Baptist Church, Lynbrook Runners Stop, Martin Associates, the Par Group and Wade Electric Inc.

“Fly with the Owls appreciates the support of the Lynbrook School District, the Village of Lynbrook and all the community members who came together to make this race a success,” said Papandrew.

Fly with the Owls Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to support positive, productive activities for youth. The proceeds from the event will help support a variety of youth programs and activities in the village and the Lynbrook School District.
