The program is offered at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and is hosted by the Service Guild, a volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the hospital experience for patients and their families. Women get tips on applying makeup and wearing wigs and other head coverings from licensed cosmetologists. Every woman who attends receives a package of top-of-the-line cosmetics donated by the Cosmetics, Toiletry & Fragrance Association. "The women are usually very happy with the results of their makeovers," said Selma Robinton, who co-chairs the program with Harriette Pine. "But what we offer that's just as important is emotional support. It's comforting to be with other women who really know what you're going through. If they're farther along the path to recovery than you are, that's an inspiration.""Look Good...Feel Better" is conducted at LIJ in Great Neck on the second Monday of every month from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Protection against the flu
The Nassau County Department of Health reminds residents that the best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu and its complications is to get immunized every year. People at highest risk who should be immunized include those age 65 and older, adults and children with chronic metabolic, cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders, including diabetes and asthma, pregnant women with underlying medical conditions and those more than three months pregnant during flu season, residents and staff of nursing homes and children six to nine months who have never been vaccinated for the flu. In addition, the Department of Health recommends that adults age 50- to 64-years-old, children between six months and 23 months, those living with or caring for children under 2-years-old and people in institutional settings such as college be vaccinated. Free flu shots for Nassau County residents over 60 years of age will be offered at several locations through November and December.Baldwin: Monday, Nov. 18 at Baldwin Senior Center, 1810 N.
