But Republicans claimed victory in the race anyway, seemingly landing another stunning blow to the Long Beach Democratic Party, which also lost all three City Council seats up for grabs.
"I'm just overwhelmed and thrilled," Ford said. "I want to pinch myself because I can't believe we did it. I'm proud of my family and friends and all the groups that supported me."
At county Republican headquarters, Ford, a registered Democrat, told supporters, "I'm proud to say I will serve you well. I love each and every single one of you."
Ford dedicated the victory to her late husband, firefighter Harry Ford, who was killed in the 2001 Father's Day fire in Queens. "I dedicate my victory to him," she said, "to the inspiration and the fact that I know he walked with me every step of the way, and every day that I campaigned, I knew my husband was with me. I want to thank him for being a good husband and helping me along with everything."
Zapson, who was pleased that Democrats would retain a majority in the county Legislature regardless of the outcome in his race, said he would wait and see what the absentee ballots and a likely recount show a week from now, but wished Ford well should the results hold up. "I think she ran a great race," Zapson said. "I wish her luck if she comes out on top."
