Former U.S. Rep. George Santos arrives at New Jersey prison to begin seven-year sentence

It is the first day of the next seven years of disgraced former U.S. Rep. George Santos' life as he arrived today at the Federal Correction Institute Fairton, a medium-security federal prison holding roughly 800 male prisoners in Fairfield Township in New Jersey, to begin his sentence.

Santos was elected to the House of Representatives in 2022, but shortly after beginning his term the New York Times revealed that he had lied extensively about his background, including claims about his previous employment, education, and that he was descended from Holocaust survivors, to name only a few. He was later charged with numerous financial crimes related to his campaign for public office, leading to a nearly two-year legal saga.

The ex-drag queen-turned politician's prison debut came after he pleaded guilty to wire fraud and identity theft last summer, for which he was ordered to serve 87 months in federal prison during his sentencing on April 25 earlier this year.

In the days leading up to his scheduled appearance in prison, Santos was frequently making cryptic posts on X which allude to a fear that he would be murdered there. In one post dated to July 9, the gay former representative posted about how he feared he would be murdered and abused in prison due to his sexuality.  According to the Death Penalty Information Center, a nonprofit focused on researching capital punishment and the incarcerated, gay people are on average 12 times more likely to be the victims of sexual violence in prison compared to heterosexuals.

The day before he surrendered himself,  Santos sent out one final post on X celebrating "...what a ride it's been." He went on to thank his supporters and critics, and claimed "Was it messy? Always. Glamorous? Occasionally. Honest? I tried...most days."

In the end, it looks like the man  who lied to everyone couldn't help but lie to himself one last time.
