There will be at least one new member of the District 24 Board of Education next school year. Trustee Frank Nuara is not seeking re-election and other incumbent seats are up for grabs. Board President Anthony Iadevaio and Trustee Lawrence Trogel are both looking for another three-year term on the board.

First-time candidates John Maier, co-president of the William L. Buck School PTA, and Stephen Rubenstein, past president of the Brooklyn Avenue School PTA and its current vice president of programming, are also vying for a spot on the board. The four candidates are competing for three seats.

Voting will take place on Tuesday, May 21 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the district’s three elementary schools, as well as the Corona Avenue Firehouse.

Anthony Iadevaio

If you’ve had any contact with District 24 over the last three decades or so, chances are you know Anthony Iadevaio, who has served on the school board for the last 33 years.

In that time, Iadevaio has seen a lot and made impactful decisions on behalf of students and residents in the community, but he has no plans to stop now as he’s seeking another term on the board. This year, he serves as president of both the District 24 and Central High School District boards.

Iadevaio said he still has the drive and determination to provide students with a quality education and added that his years of experience on both boards, mixed with his honesty, transparency and ability to reach a compromise, make him a vital member of the board.

With a new apartment complex set to open next year near the Brooklyn Avenue Elementary School on Sunrise Highway, and the possibility of another complex added on, Iadevaio said he envisions the district offices being moved out of the William L. Buck School sometime over the next three years so the district could use that space for additional classrooms. Where the offices will be moved to is something the board and administration will have to discuss in the near future.
