Four elementary schools get STEM labs

Each of Long Beach’s four elementary schools are now equipped with state-of-the-art STEM labs, thanks to a $100,000 New York State grant.

The grant, secured by State Sen. Todd  Kaminsky, a Long Beach Democrat, provides the labs to the East, Lido, Lindell and West elementary schools.

The funds were used to purchase new furniture such as write-on, wipe-off student tables, flexible seating, green screens for video production, new smart boards, new student Chromebooks and iPads, tripods, lighting kits, animal tanks, terraria, bookcases, USB charging stations, device carts, storage cabinets, storage bins and start-up supplies.

“Long Beach is a vibrant community and an incredible place to raise a family,’ Kaminsky said. “I was proud to secure funding to outfit the elementary schools’ STEM labs that will ensure our children receive a high-quality education with state-of-the-art technology.”

Long Beach Board of Education President Dr. Dennis Ryan said the schools are “greatly indebted to Senator Kaminsky for his support and advocacy of STEM resources for the students in Long Beach.” He said the labs allow students the opportunity to “apply math and science principles in a novel and rewarding way.”

East School’s STEM room is called the “Innovation Station.” Kathy Connelly, East School’s principal, said the room has “come alive” due to the grant and that the school is grateful.

“It has given our students hands-on opportunities to engage in innovative projects and explore science and technology like never before.”
