Rockville Centre — and South Side High School — produced a record number of interns participating in Richner Communications’ 2012 summer program. Of the 21 interns, representing some of the finest educational institutions in the country, four call Rockville Centre home.
“We have an excellent group of talented interns this summer,” said Stuart Richner, the Herald’s publisher who is president of Richner Communications. “We feel as a leader in local print and online journalism, it’s our responsibility to help inform and train students interested in journalism about the importance of community journalism. Our award-winning staff of editors and graphic designers provides invaluable, one-on-one mentoring and hands-on experience that would be hard to come by at large metro publications.”
Erica Firestone
Erica, 20, is entering her junior year at the University of Delaware as a visual communications major. At school, she works for the fashion magazine “UDress,” where she takes part in both its design and the photography that appears in the publication. While at school she helps run numerous student art shows that are held for upperclassmen and graduate students, as well as the shows that result from the numerous study abroad trips taken by students. Erica’s upcoming trip to Cambodia and Vietnam will be featured in a photography show this coming winter.
While at Richner Communications this summer, Erica has been working with the art team and says she looks forward to spending some time learning newspaper production as well. Photographs that Erica took of the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce Street Fair last month appeared in the June 28 Rockville Centre Herald. A South Side High School class of 2010 graduate, Erica received an International Baccalaureate diploma.
