Franklin Square's $27,569,865 proposal, a 7.2 percent jump over the current year, failed by a vote of 1,034 to 945. Last year's budget passed by a razor-thin 7 votes, 786 to 779.
In the three-way race for a seat in the Franklin Square school district, voters had their choice of incumbent Jean Fichtl and challengers Margaret Murphy and Russel Hanson. Fitchl won comfortably with 835 votes, with Murphy coming in a strong second with 631 vote. Hanson received 305 votes.
For the second time in as many years, Valley Stream District 13 voters shot down the proposed $34.3 million budget, a 9.33 percent -- or $2.9 million -- increase over the current year's budget, with 1,349 opposed and 1,219 in favor. Last year's double-digit increase in the tax levy paved the way for a 1,077 to 1,030 defeat.
Debra Evans beat out Joseph DiSibio for the contested board seat by 9-vote margin, 1,002 to 993.
The Elmont budget, set at $58,023,082, a 5.54 percent increase over the current year and including a 5.67 increase in the tax levy, passed easily by a vote of 1,262 to 827. Uncontested seats went to incumbent Aubrey Phillips and newcomer Elsy Mecklembourg Guibert.
Sewanhaka's proposed $126,501,634 budget, a 6.84 percent increase and representing a 6.2 percent increase in the tax levy, passed with a comfortable 4,186 to 3,802 margin. Learning from last year's 2,892 to 2,495 defeat, Sewanhaka towed the line on spending increases, a move that seemed to pay off.
The Valley Stream Central High School District's $81.9 million budget for squeaked by with a 2,242 to 2,206 victory.
