"Living with Teenagers: Strategies

for Positive Discipline"
Winthrop-University Hospital's "Parenting Today" educational series will present a free lecture, "Living with Teenagers," on Wednesday, May 10t at 7:00 p.m. Held at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola, the program will offer parents strategies for positive discipline that can help guide teens as they search for independence.Carmela Granata-Bernacchio, MS, Director of PACE, Parent and Child Education Center, will provide tips for reinforcing parental authority, turning teens' mistakes into lessons, and helping teens earn self-respect while reducing their sense of entitlement. The program is interactive - attendees are invited to bring questions and let the workshop address their needs.Parking and the entrance are in the rear of the building. "Women's Urinary Incontinence: It's Curable"


As women age, urinary incontinence is a common problem, often causing embarrassment and discomfort. However, there's no reason to suffer. Winthrop-University Hospital's "Health Update for Seniors" educational series will sponsor a free program, "Urinary Incontinence: It's Curable" on Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at 1:15 p.m. Held at the Mineola Community Center, 155 Washington Avenue in Mineola, the program will address the different types of urinary incontinence and available treatment options.Alan Garely, MD, Chief of Gynecology and Director of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at Winthrop, will discuss incontinence in women, as well as review treatment options such as minimally invasive surgical procedures, medications and behavioral therapies. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.The program begins with blood pressure checks at 1:15 p.m., followed by the lecture at 1:45. Admission is free, but seating is limited. CPR and ALCS courses at South Nassau Hospital


South Nassau Communities Hospital is offering cardio pulmonary resuscitation and advanced cardiac life support courses throughout May and June.The next basic life support courses will be held on Sunday, May 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the hospital's Albert Conference Room, and Wednesday, May 10, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., Conference Room Number Four. A basic life support course costs $75 per person. The next infant and child CPR course will be held on Wednesday, May 17 at 10 p.m. in the hospital's Parent Child Ed. Free Stroke Risk Assessment at Winthrop-University Hospital May 16


May is National Stroke Awareness Month. According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of disability.To promote awareness, Winthrop-University Hospital's "Perspectives in Health" educational series will offer a free Stroke Risk Assessment program on Tuesday, May 16, 2006. The assessment will consist of a blood pressure check, carotid bruit and risk factor review. Participants will have the opportunity to sign up for a free vascular screening at a future date.Assessments will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard at the corner of Second Street in Mineola. A lecture will follow at 7:30 p.m.Presenter Kathleen Michel, MSN, FNP, Cerebral Vascular Coordinator at Winthrop, will discuss how to identify and reduce risk factors, as well as how early treatment may reduce the severity of a stroke. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.Parking and the entrance are available in the rear of the building. The program is free, but reservations are required.
