Uninsured Health and Enrollment Fair



A national "Cover the Uninsured Week Health and Enrollment Fair" will be held on Saturday, May 15, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ocean Bay Community Center, at 57-10 Beach Channel Drive, Far Rockaway, Queens. The fair is co-sponsored by the New York City Housing Authority, St. John's Episcopal Hospital and Healthfirst."Gaining access to health care is a critical problem in the Rockaways and 'Cover the Uninsured Week' will help us achieve a healthier community," said Luis A. Hernandez, chief executive officer of St. John's Episcopal Hospital. "We want to raise awareness that assistance is available for people without health insurance who qualify." The Health and Enrollment Fair will offer the opportunity for community residents to speak with knowledgeable enrollers about Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus and other health insurance opportunities. In addition, free health screenings will be offered for cholesterol, asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, podiatry and vision. Entertainment will include family fun activities, including a moonbounce and face painting. At 1 p.m., the Church of God Christian Academy Choir will perform a medley of spiritual songs. In addition, there will be free popcorn, snacks, refreshments and giveaways. The event will be held rain or shine.There are nearly 44 million Americans living without health coverage, including 8.5 million children. In 2002, the number of people without health coverage increased by more than two million, the largest one-year increase in a decade. Reversing this disturbing trend, elevating this issue on the national and local agendas, educating Americans about the problem and providing immediate assistance to the uninsured and small business owners are the goals of Cover the Uninsured Week 2004. NUMC nurse manager up for excellence award



Janet St. John, RN, nurse manager for Nassau University Medical Center's (NUMC) Blood Donors Center in East Meadow, was nominated for Nurse of Excellence for Nassau Suffolk Hospital Council. St. John has been employed at NUMC for 30 years and during the course of her employment, has worked in various clinical settings with the majority of her career having been spent in the out-patient Blood Donor Center. The program is originated with the simple mission of providing donation services, but has since grown to include community programs such as blood services with many law enforcement agencies, schools and various other institutions, bone marrow drives for potential donors and transfusion treatments for oncology patients and those suffering from chronic blood dyscrasias or hemotological disorders. Under her direction, the center has been recognized as a regional center of excellence for Cooleys Anemia and Sickle Cell Anemia and donations have increased to 5,000 per year with transfusion services provided for more than 150 patients each year.


Volunteers needed



Nassau HealthCare Corporation is looking for volunteers for a few hours a week to benefit patients and visitors at its Community Health Centers in Westbury, Freeport, Elmont, Hempstead Village, Long Beach and Inwood. The Auxiliary Department at the hospital oversees hundreds of volunteers and junior volunteers who perform many duties, including playing with and reading to children in the Pediatrics Ward and assisting with clerical work. Nassau HealthCare is also in need of volunteer interpreters who can assist in foreign languages such as Spanish, French, Polish, Russian and Chinese. Anyone interested in volunteering must be 14 years of age or older and a physical is required. Mercy offers stroke screening program



Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre will be offering "Stroke Alert,!" which is the American Stroke Association's Free Stroke Screening program, on Monday, May 24 in the Mercy League Lounge at the CHS Management Center, from 8 a.m. to noon. The program will include blood pressure screenings, a cholesterol screening, carotid artery assessment and dietary recommendations. The registration deadline is Monday, May 17. St. John's needs volunteers for Flower Power Day



St. John's Episcopal Hospital, South Shore, is asking for community volunteers to help plant flowers for Flower Power Day on Wednesday, May 12, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The beautification project will focus on the grounds around the hospital, at 327 Beach 19th Street and Brookhaven Avenue. "We are asking the community's assistance to help beautify the hospital," said Luis A. Hernandez, chief executive officer of St. John's Episcopal Hospital.
