Freeport sticks around in playoff contention

Freeport’s boys lacrosse team is showing clear signs of growth and resilience under coach Mark Andrejack.

Sitting at an even 4-4 record, the Red Devils have demonstrated measurable improvement against tough competition, signaling the program is moving in the right direction.

One of the most telling moments of the season came in a narrow 8-7 overtime loss to Glen Cove April 16. While an OT loss is tough to handle, the margin marked a significant step forward compared to last year’s 10-3 defeat against the same opponent. It’s the kind of progress that reflects both development and belief within the squad.

“We were proud with how hard our guys played against Glen Cove,” Andrejack said. “To take them to OT really showed me that we’ve gotten better.”

Freeport has also picked up some convincing wins. On April 14, the Red Devils defeated Hempstead 14-9 behind standout performances from senior Anthony Pinto and Dawud Abdul-Ali. Pinto tallied three goals and four assists, continuing to serve as the offensive quarterback from behind the net, while Abdul-Ali added four goals and two assists, showcasing his physical presence and leadership.

Just a few days later, Freeport dominated Roosevelt in a 12-0 shutout victory. Jeremy Henderson led the charge with three goals and three assists, and Enrique Mendoza-Pineyro contributed two goals and two assists in another all-around performance.

Mendoza-Pineyro, a sophomore, has been the centerpiece of Freeport’s attack. With 30 total points (21 goals and 9 assists), he leads the team while contributing in every phase of the game, including faceoffs and transition play. “His versatility and leadership at such a young age make him a cornerstone for the program’s future,” Andrejack said.

Pinto leads the team in assists with 17, while Henderson has added 11 helpers of his own, giving the Red Devils a balanced and dynamic offensive unit.

Senior goalie Malik Grover has been a steady presence, recording 60 saves so far this season. A four-year varsity player, Grover brings experience and composure to the back line. He’s joined by contributors like Jalen Brown, who continues to develop on defense, and David Atto, adding depth and toughness. Midfielder Josh Soto has also embraced a leadership role, impacting both ends of the field and setting the tone for the team’s work ethic. “The coaching staff has been very pleased to see Josh develop leadership skills,” Andrejack said.

Andrejack has emphasized consistency and attention to detail as key factors for continued success. With a challenging schedule, the Red Devils are being tested regularly, but the coaching staff views this as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. The team is focused on improving daily, embracing a mindset built around effort, discipline, and growth.

As the season progresses, the Red Devils remain focused on steady improvement. With a commitment to doing the little things right and continuing to build a strong culture, Freeport is positioning itself not just for short term success, but for sustained progress in the seasons ahead.

“We want to see consistency in practice everyday,” Andrejack said. “We’re happy with how the guys have developed and believe if we continue to get better each day, it will lead to success.”
