About 165 golfers participated in the 37th annual Friends of Mercy Golf Classic on Oct. 10 at the Garden City Country Club, which raised $105,000.

Proceeds of the event were set to go toward two construction projects, including renovations to Mercy Medical Center’s labor and delivery unit and the building of a Good Shepherd Hospice unit at Mercy.

The labor and delivery unit will be housed in a new Women’s Pavilion and will feature private suites, modern amenities and a spectrum of services for new and expectant mothers and their babies. The project is scheduled to be completed by next spring. Mercy Medical Center is home to the only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on the South Shore of Nassau County.

Good Shepherd Hospice will be a 12-bed unit providing care to patients whose symptoms cannot be managed in home environments due to the need for complex treatments and frequent medication dose changes. Construction began last February and is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

During the evening ceremony, Michael J. Boranian, chairman of the Friends of Mercy, recognized United Sleep Diagnostic’s Brian Falgoust, Greg Falgoust, Michael Bianco and Al Murray, as the Golf Classic honorees for their innovation and partnership with Mercy on creating a quality sleep program.

Mercy and United Sleep have been working together since 2004 to help improve the quality of sleep of those working in demanding fields. Just recently, Mercy and United Sleep were awarded a competitive contract from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to provide sleep apnea screenings and treatment.
