South Side Middle School students of Girl Scout Troop 842 completed a Courtyard Beautification Project at the middle school in early June. The project, which will earn the girls their Silver Award, involved a year of planning, fundraising and hard work to transform a barren courtyard into a welcoming garden. The girls built and painted benches, created murals, and with the help of their art teacher Joanne Wojdylo, coordinated rock painting sessions so that all 280 8th graders moving up to the high school could leave behind a personalized painted rock. The rocks were then used to accentuate the gardens and path. As a result of the troop’s efforts, current and future SSMS students and faculty will now be able to enjoy the courtyard.
