Rockville Centre clubs, organizations and residents at Kids Fest lucked out for the second straight year with a perfect sunny Saturday that had residents still thinking of summer.
The Lions Club was in attendance again to perform the Duck Pluck, a fundraiser in which residents buy Ducks for Diabetes to raise money for various diabetes and sight-related charities. The Duck Pluck had dozens of prizes, including $1,000 and a 42-inch HDTV.
All money raised was donated to Lions Club charities, both sight-related and local, including the Rockville Centre Community Fund, the museum at The Phillips House, the Youth Council, Little League Challenger Division, Sandel Senior Center’s FOSSI, American Legion and veterans programs, Mercy Medical Center’s Outpatient Diabetes Education Center, Winthrop-University Hospital’s Diabetes Camp, the Guide Dog Foundation, St. Baldrick’s, the Rockville Centre St. Patrick’s Parade Committee, Lions Eye Foundation and many more.
Other village organizations, including the lacrosse, basketball and baseball leagues, had representatives on hand to register new members.
Soldiers from the Second Battalion, 25th Marines Infantry Unit, in Garden City, drew a large audience with their display of a high-mobility, multipurpose- wheeled vehicle, better known as humvees, while the Nassau County Police Department showed off a 1972 orange and blue Plymouth Fury Patrol Car and a helicopter.
Among the other emergency responders who took part were Special Operations Police, who showed off specialized armored truck, and village firefighters, who displayed two of their trucks.
Other exhibits at the fair included an 8-foot-long male python a karate performance by the Shaolin Self Defense center in Oceanside.
It’s a wonderful, great day,” said Rockville Centre Deputy Mayor Nancy Howard. “I think it’s a phenomenal turnout and it’s great for the community.”
