Firemen's Field was the scene of a celebration of our nation's independence and Valley Stream's sense of community at the Eleventh Annual Old-Fashioned Fourth of July fireworks spectacular sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the Incorporated Village of Valley Stream.
Nearly 5,000 people came together to see the beautiful fireworks that lit up the dark, rainy, night sky and to bond with friends and family.
Mayor Edward Cahill said that a special thanks should be given to co-chair Vincent Ang and Carol Gallo-Turschmann for putting the festivities together.
The evening started off with pop music by artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera and Daft Punk, disc- jockeyed by "In the Mix."
Included in the display were two military Hum V and a "kiddie korner." The gleeful giggles of children could be heard over the music as Spunky the clown and Uncle Sam on stilts entertained the young festival goers by doing magic tricks and blowing up balloons in the shape of their favorite animals.
"The Fourth of July is the best day of the year because you get to see fireworks," said 13-year-old Lynbrook resident Eric Laukaitis.
Spectators' eyes were glued to the dancers of "Tap to Pointe," who took the stage performing their choreographed tap, jazz and ballet routines to traditional July 4 music and to the songs of Broadway musicals.
Taking the audience back in time were "The Cascades," with their golden oldies performance. Just as they sang their hit song, "Rhythm of the Rain," drops of rain began to fall.
With flashes of red, white and blue, the night sky lit up as Bay Fireworks' musically choreographed fireworks. The excitement of the crowd did not cease when a light drizzle fell once again. Their attention was fixed to the sight of the finale.
"The fireworks were awesome and are something that I look forward to every year," said Valley Stream resident Kathryn Dionsyiou.
First-time and veteran spectators seemed to agree. Valley Stream resident Debbie Alfano said, "I think it's wonderful; it is my first time coming here and this is great." Sitting on the blanket next to her was Linda Baxter, another Valley Stream resident, who said, "I think this is a lovely tradition, we come here every year since I was a kid."
Co-chair Gallo-Turschmann said, "this is a wonderful community event, one big block party with fireworks at the end. It shows the kind of sprit Valley Stream has, a big town with small-town heart." Gallo added that she "receives a warm feeling with everyone having fun."
"This is a wonderful thing to bring the community together," said Woodmere resident Andy Finiasz, summing up the evening's exciting events.
