This year’s Rockville Centre Fireworks Celebration, marking the village’s 119th anniversary, is set for Saturday evening, July 7 (rain date is Sunday, July 8) and will feature a fantastic display of pyrotechnics by Long Island’s own Grucci family at Centennial Park at Mill River. The fireworks begin at 9:15 p.m., but with this year’s additional entertainment and food that gets under way at 6 p.m., there is even more reason to get to the park early.
Once again, the event is sponsored by the Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts, with donations by residents and businesses who make it possible. Organizers, who have special thanks for Orlin & Cohen, Concierge Choice Physicians LLC, Molloy College, South Nassau Communities Hospital, The Kearns Family and State Farm Insurance, say the evening is a great chance to relax and enjoy old fashioned family entertainment, and it’s also a great way to enjoy a summer evening under the stars. The show is free and everyone is welcome. Just bring your own chairs and blankets.
This year, food vendors from the area will be selling delicacies from 6 p.m. to until the fireworks begin. Participating vendors so far include: Busco’s, Cruisin Kitchen, Get Baked and Pretzel Stop.
Starting at 7:45 p.m., the South Shore Symphony will again play selections from “Souza to Broadway.” Leggz Ltd. dancers will add to the festivities with a performance to the “Stars and Stripes Forever.” The Fireworks committee has also expanded the entertainment that will begin at 6 p.m. with three special guest performances. Crystalyn Wynter, 20, a South Side High School graduate, who starred in the school’s productions of “Les Miserables” as Eponine and “Carousel” as Nettie Fowler, will sing. Crystalyn has won Amateur Night at the Apollo in 2008 and 2009 and the 2010 Nassau County “Reach for the Stars” vocal competition. The Voices of Virtue, an extension of the Hempstead Select Chorale, combining current and post high school students, will also perform. It has earned international recognition that includes top honors at a competition in Verona, Italy. This year Voices of Virtue joined the Chorale to participate in another competition in Prague, Czech Republic, where they were the only American choir to compete and proudly brought home the highest score. Also featured will be talented local dancers from Miss Colleen’s Elite Dancentre in a special performance.
