The event, which this year pitted five schools against each other for a morning of field day-like competitions, brought together students in special education programs from across Nassau County.
This year, participating schools included Calhoun, Garden City, Massapequa, Oceanside and Seaford, said Heather Riddiough, a Calhoun phys.-ed. teacher and the event organizer. Calhoun takes in special education students from throughout the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District.
More than 120 special education students took part in the event. Each was teamed up with a buddy from mainstream classes. Among the Calhoun clubs that aided in the effort were Athletes Helping Athletes, Distributive Education Clubs of America, World of Difference and the Calhoun Leadership Academy.
The purpose of the event is to offer a day of fun and games for special education students while bringing them together with students in the mainstream.
