Her left leg was amputated above the knee; efforts are under way to save her right leg. Now her friends are organizing a fund-raiser to aid the young woman, who is described as "beautiful and talented."
The fund-raiser will be held at R.S. Jones Restaurant in Merrick on Sunday, Aug. 26, from noon to 3 p.m. The cover charge will be $25 and includes a "fabulous buffet." There will also be live entertainment, a silent auction, 50/50 raffles and a cash bar. All proceeds will benefit Nugent.
Right now, Nugent is hospitalized at Albany Medical Center, unable to be moved. She is a deacon for her church and a student at SUNY-Farmingdale. Before the accident, she was also a professional ballroom dancer and a jogger.
