This November 6 will be Nick Cangemi’s second year running the New York City Marathon through Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) to raise money for bladder cancer research. He is doing it in memory of his mother, Catherine A. Cangemi, who died of the disease in 2009, after being diagnosed just eight months earlier.
“My mother passed away two years ago on September 25 … therefore, in my mother’s name and [in her] honor, I’ve decided to dedicate some of my time to raise money for people who deserve to be cured.” He said that
Cangemi, 27, grew up in East Rockaway and attended St. Raymond’s elementary, Kellenberg High School and Hofstra University. He is currently working on toward his Masters degree to become a physician assistant at Hofstra. He has a younger sister, Michelle, 26, who works at Memorial Sloan Kettering, where their mother was a patient.
The run will be preceded on October 9 by a fundraiser at The Fishery in East Rockaway. “Last year’s event at The Fishery had a great turn out,” said Cangemi. “There were about 150 to 200 people out enjoying the day and coming together for a great cause. We raised nearly $10,000 in three hours — it was an amazing day.”
The Fishery event on October 9 will include a three-hour open bar, food, live music, raffles, cause bracelets and more. All the money raised will go directly to MSKCC. “I invite everyone to come out an enjoy themselves.”
