Fire in the night frightens east Valley Stream neighborhood
Valley Stream firefighters were awakened at 3:04 A.M. Tuesday by their radio alert pages to a "Signal 10, General Alarm Fire," at Whitehall Millwork, 100 Railroad Avenue. On arrival, firefighters were confronted with flames pushing out the roof and all four sides of the building of the one-story building, and propane tanks exploding in the background. Chief James Murphy requested mutual aid from numerous surrounding departments to assist in the fire fighting effort. The fire was reported under control at 6:30 A.M., and all Valley Stream units returned to quarters.
A Valley Stream resident living near the blaze said that neighbors were up all night because of the heavy smoke conditions and explosions. Some feared they would be unable to return to their homes. "It was very traumatizing for everyone," the resident said.
