The alleged attacks began June 26 and took place at various locations in Valley Stream and West Hempstead over the weekend, according to Sgt. John Roden of the Fifth Precinct. Roden declined to elaborate on the exact locations of the incidents.
Timothy Melton, 41, who police say lives at 115-47 237th Street, was arrested near his home June 28 at 4:30 a.m., police said. Police became aware of the attacks when the teen's mother accompanied her daughter to the Fifth Precinct Station House in Elmont. Following conversations with the teen and witnesses, police made the arrest. Roden declined to elaborate on how many witnesses there are or on the relationships among the witnesses, Melton and the alleged victim.
The girl is an acquaintance of Melton's 16-year-old son, Roden said. Prior to the attack, she had spent much of Saturday with Melton and others, police said.
She was treated at Nassau University Medical Center and released, police said.
Melton is charged with second-degree rape, which means the victim was incapable of giving consent, and second-degree criminal sexual act, formerly called sodomy. He was arraigned June 30.
According to an article in a Long Island daily newspaper, Melton is the father of four and lives in Queens. Through his sister, Melton denied being in Valley Stream at the time of the alleged attacks, and she said he has an alibi, the article said.
