Rockville Centre’s adult and student communities had a lesson in good will on Sept. 9 as Art Flower & Gift Shoppe hosted its first annual FTD Good Neighbor Day to benefit Camp Anchor. Mayor Mary Bossart officially proclaimed that Wednesday as “Good Neighbor” day in Rockville Centre.
Starting at 8 a.m. the shop, partnering with the Sky Athletic Club, sold roses throughout town to raise money for Camp Anchor, a year-round recreational and social program for children and adults with special needs. Anyone buying a rose was asked to present it to someone they consider a good neighbor — spreading good will and friendship throughout the community.
The shop worked with volunteers from Sky Athletic, Camp Anchor as well as with students from Sacred Heart High School. The money raised will be used by the camp for a new facility being planned.
“We’ll be doing this again next year and we’ll start preparing earlier — this year it was sort of a spur-of-the-moment project,” said Debbie Whitfield, Art Flower’s manager. “But Keith [Linsalata, Art Flower’s owner] was very happy with the support from our good neighbors.”
“We continued the sale over the next couple of days — while we had the roses we sold them for Camp Anchor,” said Whitfield.
