Uhlich began her Hewlett-Woodmere schools career in 1990 as the assistant superintendent for instruction and was later named to deputy superintendent.
Uhlich, who has been involved in education for 35 years, spent her first 19 years as a social studies teacher in Seaford, and subsequently as assistant superintendent in Seaford and Carle Place, before beginning her service in Hewlett-Woodmere.
She earned her doctorate in educational research and administration from Hofstra University. She and her husband of 34 years, Roger, have one son, Keith, and are longtime residents of Lynbrook.
It is too early to tell what the district will do after Uhlich retires, said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Charles Fowler, but, he added, she will be greatly missed. It will be difficult to replace someone like Dr. Uhlich, Fowler said. And her wonderful skills are probably not replaceable. I wish her well. I have nothing but the highest regard for her and all her work here [in the district].
Richard Braverman, school board
president, shared positive sentiments towards Uhlich's retirement. I'm very happy for Myrna but sad for the district, he said. She has been a wonderful administrator, a true lady and a pleasure to work with.
Braverman also said that it is too early to say what the district's plans are for the future and finding a replacement for Uhlich.
Dr. Helene Agatstein, administrative assistant, agreed that Uhlich will be missed throughout the district. She is a vital part of this district and she will be very truly missed, she said. She has always been an active worker and has always been there for us. She was great to work with.
Uhlich said that she will continue to work hard for the district until her retirement. I still have a lot to do Ñ good things, she said.
