Community Health Fair set for October 1
Franklin Hospital's Annual Community Health Fair "Helping You Thrive in 2005," will take place on Saturday, October 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be housed under a tent, rain or shine, on the hospital grounds. The fair offers the public an opportunity to obtain health-related information on a variety of topics, talk with health care professionals, and obtain free medical screenings.This year's informational exhibits will include cardiovascular prevention, ask the pharmacist, nutrition, stroke precaution, home care, cancer awareness, dental health, and many more. Free screenings will be available for cholesterol and diabetes (it is recommended that you don't eat 12 hours prior to the test), blood pressure, glaucoma, hearing, pulmonary function, podiatry, and breast exams. Individuals who wish to take advantage of any of the screenings must register that day by 12:30 p.m. The Nassau County Police Department's Fifth Precinct will be providing Kids Pix ID and fingerprint kits. The Malverne Fire Department will also be on hand to discuss fire safety and offer children tours of a fire truck. Walk to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society invites everyone to participate in the seventh annual "Light the Night Walk." The walks will take place on Thursday, September 22 at the Hofstra Arena in Uniondale, and Thursday, October 6 at Computer Associates in Islandia. Check-in begins at 5:30 p.m. and the walks start at 7:00 p.m. More than a walk, the evening includes music, food, and family activities. Mercy Medical Center offers free prostate screening
Mercy Medical Center is sponsoring free prostate screenings. The screenings will take place on Tuesday, September 20 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in St. Anne's Center at Mercy Medical Center. Each screening will include a PSA Lab Test and a manual exam by Mercy Medical Center professionals. Studies have shown that men over 40 years of age are at greater risk for prostate cancer and that early detection often increases your chances of being cured. Free cancer coping program at Franklin Hospital
"Look Good...Feel Better," a free program to teach women how to cope with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment, will be held at Franklin Hospital on Monday, September 26 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Greenberg Conference Room. Professional cosmetologists will teach special techniques to minimize the effects of skin changes and hair loss, including application of makeup, use of turban and scarves to best advantage, and appropriate choice and care of wigs. Complimentary cosmetic kits will be provided to each participant to use at home. Look Good...Feel Better is offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, National Cosmetology Association, and the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association Foundation. The program will be offered bi-monthly at Franklin. Seating is limited and reservations are required.
