Village of Valley Stream Justice Robert G. Bogle was sworn in as the 95th president of the New York State Magistrates Association before a crowd of almost 1,000 last month at the Saratoga Springs Convention Center.
Bogle is only the third Long Islander to be elected president in the history of the association. The Magistrates Association represents the 2,300 town and village justices in the state. It is one of the oldest judicial associations in New York and is responsible for education and training programs, as well as lobbying the state on behalf of the interests of the judicial association.
"Judge Bogle is well regarded by his fellow judges and brings to the table a wealth of experience in the courts, in educational experience and in relationships of government and the judiciary" said Dutch Magill, the outgoing President of the association. "I am happy that Bob will be my successor."
Bogle has been elected five times as justice in Valley Stream, one of the largest village courts in New York. He is currently the chief court attorney in the Nassau County Court Department of Law and is an adjunct professor at C. W. Post , Long Island University. He has also served as president of the Nassau County Magistrates. During the the last 14 years, he has been a continuing legal education instructor for the Office of Court Administration, state of New York. He occasionally sits as an acting city court judge for the city of Long Beach.
"I am extremely honored to serve as president of such a distinguished organization," Bogle said. "Not only are the village and town courts known to be the closest to the people, they are also the largest and oldest, and date back to the 1600's. It is with this sense of history that we move into the 21st century with our eye on improvement in the judicial system."
Bogle plans on visiting most of the county organizations throughout the state to enable him to gain perspective on their concerns.
"Some courts like Amherst (Buffalo) or Hempstead Village are extremely large," he said. "Yet many courts are extremely small and meet only one time a month. It is important that all justice courts receive the same benefit from our organization and from the State of New York. I believe it is particularly important for us to lobby the state legislature and governor's office for issues that affect the improvement of the justice system. Although, I have been in office less than a month and I have already made it a point to visit the state legislature in Albany and bring our concerns to them."
Bogle lives in Valley Stream with his wife, Kathleen, and their children, James and Robert.
