Walking down the streets en route to the display, one could sense excitement in the close knit community, as parties commenced on a number of front lawns, and children played on almost every block. Centennial Park by Mill River was flooded with families and friends eagerly anticipating the start of the fireworks at about 9 p.m., when darkness fell. As people enjoyed each other's company, relaxing on their blankets and lawn chairs, sharing food and drink, they were treated to a concert by the South Shore Symphony, a regular at the annual event. Under the direction of Scott Jackson Wiley, this year's performance was a tribute to Leroy Anderson, considered to be one of America's four greatest twentieth century composers of instrumental music, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. Guests were also entertained by dancers from Leggz Ltd. who performed to music from "South Pacific," also performed by the South Shore Symphony. The fireworks were a wonderful display of colors and patterns. An estimated crowd of approximately 10,000 ooed and ahed in amazement throughout the entire pyrotechnic event as Grucci delivered its "State Class" display, meaning the show lasted approximately 17 minutes and cost the village $20,000. On a beautiful night shared by many members of the community, it was a time to celebrate the Village of Rockville Centre.
