'Hawks lose battle of Troy: Can't knockoff Garden City in conference final

Posted
The defense held the Trojans to a three-and-out on their first drive, recovered a fumble on Garden City's second drive and intercepted senior quarterback Steven Carroll on their third drive. The latter resulted in a three-yard touchdown run by junior halfback T.J Humrich that added to a three-point lead forged by senior kicker Eric Vollmer's 32-yard field goal. Vollmer missed the extra point, but the Seahawks had a 9-0 lead and momentum, paced by a raucous Carey crowd.
That was as good as it got for Carey. Garden City junior halfback Tim Harder broke through the previously stingy Seahawks defense and raced 65 yards to paydirt to put the Trojans on the board with 6:21 remaining in the third quarter. Junior kicker Dillon Dwyer made the point after to cut Carey's lead to two, 9-7. He booted a 39-yard field goal on the Trojans' next possession with :19 seconds left in the first half to put Garden City ahead, 10-9. Garden City scored 21 unanswered points in the second half for a 31-9 win at Shuart Stadium at Hofstra University last Friday and its fourth Nassau Conference II championship since 2000.
Carey will go another year without a conference crown, a drought that dates back to 1978. But unlike most schools who will be decimated by graduation, the Seahawks' future is bright. Halfbacks Humrich and Matt Zaffuto will be returning, as will sophomore fullback Jamie Spanopoulos. On defense, sophomore interception specialist Sal Intagliata will again lead the Carey secondary.
