Even before school ended June 22, the East Meadow School District's major summer construction projects got under way, said Joseph Barbera, director of school facilities and operations. And so far, many of them are running on schedule.
"Some are slightly behind, others we are still waiting for approval from SED (State Department of Education), but those that have been approved and awarded are on time and going well," Barbera said. "We have very good contractors and they are working very hard to get things done by the start of the next school year."
Every school in the district will receive renovations and/or new construction during the summer break, such as building additions; roof, window, boiler and toilet replacement; and other infrastructure renovations and reconstructions.
Most of these renovations, constructions and reconstructions are due to a 2000 $50-million bond the district passed to improve facilities across the district. Construction on some of the projects started last fall, Barbera said, and the district hopes to have all the work completed within a two year period.
"It's going to be a very busy summer and fall," Barbera said, referring to the construction and maintenance work at the eight school buildings.
