Health aid drowns in local pool

Posted
According to police, an elderly resident of the home called the police at 5:07 p.m. on Sept. 4 and said that the health aid might be drowning in the in-ground pool. When officers JoAnne McNelis and Anthony Castellano arrived at the house, police said, McNelis saw the woman on the bottom of the pool and dived in to rescue her. Malverne Police Chief John Aresta joined McNelis in the effort, and the two pulled the woman to the side of the pool, where Castellano helped pull her out of the water, police said.
The officers performed CPR on the unconscious woman, and were soon assisted by Nassau County Police emergency medical technicians. The woman, a Queens resident who was caring for an elderly man in the home, was then rushed to Franklin Hospital Medical Center in Valley Stream, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
The victim’s name was being withheld until her relatives were notified.
