Town of Hempstead officials are reminding residents to prioritize safety on local waterways during National Safe Boating Week, May 16–22.
Supervisor John Ferretti and the Town Board announced that Bay Constables will offer free vessel safety checks on May 15 and May 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Curtis E. Fisher West Marina boat ramp. The inspections are available by appointment.
The initiative is part of the town’s effort to promote safe, responsible boating as the summer season approaches. Ferretti also highlighted expanded boating safety education programs, including free boater safety courses designed to help residents comply with New York state’s Brianna’s Law, now fully in effect.
Officials said the checks are intended to ensure boats are properly equipped and to give operators confidence heading into the busy summer season.
“Hempstead Town is proud to support National Safe Boating Week by offering residents an opportunity to make sure they’re fully prepared before heading out on the water,” Ferretti wrote in a news release. “Our Bay Constables play a vital role in protecting those who enjoy our bays and waterways, and these checks are a simple step that can make a significant difference.”
During the inspections, Bay Constables will review safety items including life jackets, fire extinguishers, navigation lights, sound-producing devices and registration documents. Boaters can also ask questions and receive guidance on safe navigation practices.
Bay Constables will conduct the inspections by appointment, reviewing required safety equipment and providing guidance to boaters before they head out on the water.
The town is also offering free boater safety courses to help residents comply with New York state’s Brianna’s Law, which requires operators of motorized watercraft to complete a certified safety course.
“Boating is one of the many great recreational opportunities we have here in the Town of Hempstead,” Ferretti wrote. “Taking a few minutes for a safety check helps ensure that every trip on the water is a safe and enjoyable one.”
